Gleneagles, why is the place so special to me?
My journey with Gleneagles started through a friend, who had a friend who was able to get courtesy rounds at Gleneagles, yes we got to play it for free!
I would get a call the day before saying ‘how do you fancy Gleneagles tomorrow?’ My reply would be a very quick……yes. Off we would go at 04:00 in the morning, arriving at Gleneagles about 08:00 in time for a wonderful breakfast in the Dormy Clubhouse. A great start to the day the breakfast always was. Tee off about 09:30, a good round of golf on one of the three courses, Queens, Kings or Centenary, back to the Dormy Clubhouse for lunch, set off about 16:00 then home for about 20:00. A wonderful day being had!
Since starting the Golf Business I have sent numerous groups to sample the delights of Gleneagles, the standard of everything is always very high.
The best trip I have personally had was with a group of 12 from the golf society I am involved with.
12 ordinary guys going to stay and play at Gleneagles, how good was that! We stopped off at Mar Hall and played a round of golf there to break up the journey, we just happened to meet the Scottish football team who were staying there as it was International weekend. We then set off from there on the short journey to Gleneagles.
On arrival we were greeted as you would expect at Gleneagles with 5* service, nothing else will do at Gleneagles.
A good night was had in the bar, soaking up the surroundings and getting ready for the golf the following day on The Kings Course. There was a lot of excitement in the air.
Off to bed then dreaming about the birdies and eagles we were all going to get the next day, yes dream on!
It was hard not to have a great nights sleep in the luxurious rooms with extremely comfy beds, definitely no excuses to play poor golf the next day!
You could not have a better start to a day anywhere than at the breakfast table at Gleneagles.
So much choice and quality, it really is a sight to see. A real set me up for a fantastic day on the golf course.
As said we played the Kings course that day, a wonderful course it is to. Lots of tradition, lots of quirkiness, amazing views, greens of the highest order.
There is no real need to go in to great detail about every hole, just to say, this is Gleneagles, everything is done correctly, each course is set up to a very high standard.
The Queens, though smaller than the Kings is excellent to play with some great finishing holes. It is extremely tricky and the beauty of the course and it’s surroundings can certainly lull you into thinking the course is benign! Don’t be fooled!
And then the new kid on the block, The PGA Centenary course, built and opened by Jack Nicklaus in 1993 as The Monarch’s course but later revamped and named The PGA Centenary Course. The course then hosted The Ryder Cup and subsequently The Solheim Cup.
Totally different to the Kings & Queens course The Centenary Course is a great addition.
So, yes I have a bit of a love affair with Gleneagles, she never lets me down, no matter the weather, a few storm clouds over the Ochil Hills does set a wonderful scene.
Whether you just go and play and have food in the Dormy Clubhouse ( a 4 hour drive is well worth it believe me) or you spend a day or two in the hotel whilst playing golf you will have a most wonderful time, be looked after like the two original golf courses suggest and come away with an experience you will want to have again and again.
Gleneagles, look forward to seeing you again shortly.
