Algarve

The Algarve

The Algarve is synonymous with golf which makes it an extremely popular place to go and enjoy your golf in the sun.

From the golfing hub of Vilamoura with excellent complexes such as Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago and the Dom Pedro suite of golf courses you have have to worry about having a round. The complex of Amendoeira is also a popular place to get your golfing fix. Two very good courses on site, the Faldo and the O’Connor will give your golf game a real work out!

Heading out towards Spain you find yourself stumbling across the Monte Rei resort which epitomises class and excellence. The golf course is world class, a Jack Nicklaus design and the accommodation choices are superb. Also in the area of Monte Rei is Tavira, a quieter resort than Vilamoura and one that will give you a very enjoyable feel of Portugal and the Algarve.

The Algarve has lots to offer, amazing climate, fantastic food, warm people and yes those wonderful golf courses.

Golf courses in Algarve

The Old Course

This wonderfully traditional, cork tree strewn golf course is an absolute joy to play. If you haven’t played the course yet and you are going to the Algarve then get it on your list.

From the sweeping downhill first hole, which looks so narrow (it isn’t) from the tee to the par 3 3rd hole, avoiding the strategically placed, already mentioned cork tree you are in for a fantastic journey through the 18 holes.

Then sit on the wooden balcony adjacent to the first tee and discuss over a cold beer those amazing shots you made (probably out of those, yes…..cork trees!).

Amendoeira Golf Resort

Driving along through the baron fields you suddenly come to an oasis called Amendoeira Golf Resort, with the magnificent club house perched on the hill and two wonderful courses (and a floodlight par 3 course) beckoning you in.

The Faldo Course really does have Sir Nick’s golf game written all over it. Strategic, long, bunkers just where you know your going to hit your ball. This course is extremely undulating, you have to have your ‘A’ game with you to play well here.

The second course, The O’Connor course is a tad easier though certainly not a walkover, some wonderful holes unfold in front of your eyes with a superb finishing hole with the green built in to the rocks surrounding it.

Quinta Do Lago

Take your pick, North or South course, or indeed both. Built on the same piece of land but subtly different in their make up. Both courses are extremely enjoyable to play. The amazing houses built around the course can tempt your concentration away from your golf, beware!

The clubhouse bar is a great place to while away enjoyable time with friends in the Algarve sun.

Vale do Lobo

The clubhouse is modern, straight lined and spacious, you would be extremely happy to spend some time here having a great meal and excellent wine whilst contemplating how you played or how your going to play!

Two courses, Ocean and Royal, both to be put on your list to play. Tee shots over the Ocean, those pesky cork trees, immaculate fairways and greens.

Vale do Lobo feels like a great community, one you would like to belong to.

The Algarve is a wonderful place to visit. Monte Rei is the stand out luxury resort with a golf course that stands out from the rest.
Further down the coast the established courses of Quinta do Lago and Vale do lobo will keep your golfing juices flowing. I thoroughly enjoy visiting this area of the Algarve, there are some amazing restaurants, beaches and hidden coves to explore.
Not too far from home this is a destination to enjoy for both short and long breaks.
